Launch, Leaderboards and Lots of Improvements
It's been a while since we updated Hexagon Hamlet, but trust me this is a big update. We added a cross-platform leaderboard, a bunch of quality of life improvements and even launched the game for mobile platforms. So let's go through all of these step by step and see what changed.
Leaderboards
As Hexagon Hamlet is a high-score based game we wanted to add this from the very beginning. But as it turns out it's not something you can realistically add during a two day game jam. We took our time researching different solutions and found one that seems to fit our goals perfectly. So now we can share high-scores between all platforms that Hexagon Hamlet is available without you having to make another account (Let's be honest here, we all have way too many accounts for things we don't really need). Just type in your nickname at the end of a round and submit your score. That's it.
There are still quite a few ways to improve the leaderboard, but we felt good enough we the solution we right now to release it to the public. So go ahead kick us and our testers off the top positions!
Quality of Life
Being made in just two days Hexagon Hamlet initially lacked a lot of features one might expect or like to see in such a game. With this update we added a clearer way to show whether you can build something on a tile or not. Previously you would only see a dash in the building preview when you tried to build something where it can't be built. Now we added a big red X or a green checkmark to the preview to clearly communicate where you can actually build.
Until now you had to go back to the main menu when one of the randomly generated islands was just not good enough for your taste. So we added a way that allows you to sail on to new shores faster. You can start again on a fresh island by going to the pause menu and pressing the "Quick Restart" button.
There are some more smaller improvements, but I'll leave it to you to find them in the game. If you have any feedback on the way the game plays, let us now in the comments so we can improve that in the next updates.
Mobile Launch
We also brought the game to Android and iOS! So now you can play a quick round on your daily commute. The apps are completely free with no ads or in-app purchases that could disturb your flow. The mobile versions also share the same leaderboard with the Browser version, so you can claim the number on spot while you're on your way home from work... or you know... on the toilet or something.
Thanks for reading this, now go enjoy Hexagon Hamlet on your platform of choice and have a nice day!
